Family Therapy

What is Family Therapy?

Family therapy provides a supportive and structured space where family members can work together with a psychologist to improve communication, strengthen relationships, and navigate challenges affecting the family unit.

Families often face difficulties during periods of change, conflict, stress, or when supporting a loved one experiencing mental health concerns. Family therapy helps identify unhelpful patterns, encourages open and respectful communication, and supports families in finding practical solutions together.

Sessions with psychologist Leilani de Silva focus on helping families improve communication, strengthen relationships, resolve conflict, and develop practical strategies that support healthier family dynamics and long-term wellbeing.

Who is Family Therapy For?

Family therapy is suitable for families of all shapes and sizes, including parents, children, adolescents, blended families, and extended family members who wish to improve their relationships and work through challenges together.

It can be helpful if your family is experiencing:

  • Ongoing conflict or frequent arguments
  • Communication difficulties between family members
  • Parenting challenges or behavioural concerns
  • Separation, divorce, or blended family adjustments
  • Major life transitions or family changes
  • Grief, loss, or significant life events
  • Supporting a family member with mental health concerns
  • Difficulties with adolescent behaviour or family relationships
  • Increased stress impacting family functioning
  • Relationship breakdowns within the family

What to Expect

Your first session will involve discussing your family’s concerns, current challenges, strengths, and goals for therapy. Each family member will have the opportunity to share their experiences in a safe, respectful, and supportive environment.

From there, your psychologist will guide sessions using evidence-based approaches tailored to your family’s unique needs. Therapy may focus on improving communication, resolving conflict, strengthening emotional connections, developing effective coping strategies, and building healthier family relationships.

Family therapy sessions are conducted by Leilani de Silva and are available via secure Telehealth, allowing families to attend from the comfort and convenience of their own home.
